Being told you have cataracts can feel worrying, but rest assured—they are a normal part of ageing and usually develop gradually over time. In the early stages, they may not affect your vision much, but as they progress, you may notice some changes.
What Are the Symptoms of Cataracts?
Cataracts cause a gradual clouding of the eye’s natural lens, leading to:
Blurry or hazy vision – as if your glasses are dirty or scratched
Increased glare – especially from headlights or bright lights
Frequent prescription changes – needing new glasses more often

Do I Need Treatment Right Away?
Not necessarily! Cataracts usually develop slowly, and many people manage well for years without surgery. Your optician will monitor their progression and discuss your options.
Can I Slow Down Cataract Progression?
Yes! While you can’t stop cataracts completely, you can take steps to slow them down:
Wear Sunglasses – UV exposure can speed up cataract formation, so always wear UV400 protective lenses.
Quit Smoking – Smoking increases the risk of cataracts and accelerates progression.
Have Regular Eye Exams – Your optician will track changes and give tailored advice.

What Happens If I Need Cataract Surgery?
Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful procedures performed by ophthalmologists. The cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial one, often improving vision dramatically. This is a swift procedure, typically completed in just 10 minutes!
Even if your vision seems fine after surgery, regular visits to your optician are still essential to monitor your eye health and ensure your prescription remains up to date.
Next Steps
If you’ve been told you have cataracts but your vision is fine – continue with regular eye exams to monitor them.
If your cataracts are affecting daily life – speak to your optician about whether a referral for surgery is appropriate.
Cataracts are a natural part of ageing, but with the right care, they don’t have to hold you back. If you have any concerns, book an eye exam—we’re here to help!
